GURGAON: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed the construction of a trumpet interchange with four lanes on Dwarka Expressway to link the forthcoming Global City and Vision City investments.
It will facilitate signal-free connection of the expressway with the other two planned residential and commercial centres through an underground trumpet interchange.
The proposed interchange — which will be constructed near the Pataudi Road junction on Dwarka Expressway (NH-248BB) — has been invited by Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC).
To enhance connectivity with the two upcoming residential and commercial hubs, HSIIDC has agreed to foot the project cost — pegged at Rs 923 crore. The interchange is expected to play “a key role” in supporting this expansion by providing direct connectivity between the expressway and the upcoming developments, while improving access for traffic coming from Manesar and neighbouring industrial areas, said a senior HSIIDC official.
“The proposal has been finalised and we are working out the modality for execution of the project,” a senior NHAI official said. We expect to begin the work in three months or so.” Works on the interchange are expected to take approximately 30 months. “The layout has been planned in a way that vehicles can enter or exit the developments without crossing high-speed expressway traffic, enhancing safety and also keeping uninterrupted flow on the main corridor going,” said the NHAI official.
It’s tableaux will be approx 3.2km of approach roads and ramps to connect the underpass with internal roads from Vision City and Global City. The curved loop ramp typical of a trumpet interchange will ensure smooth turnings movements, especially for vehicles approaching from the Manesar side.
According to NHAI officials, the interchange will facilitate vehicles proceeding towards Global City and Vision City from both Manesar and other areas of the city to enter these townships through a series of grade-separated ramps without interfering with fast-moving traffic on the expressway.
The intersection will also facilitate connectivity between Global City and Vision City, enabling vehicles to traverse directly from one development to the other without using the main carriageway of the expressway.
According to NHAI officials, the vehicular underpass is designed for four-lane traffic and will be built with precast RCC (reinforced cement concrete) box structures. The underpass will be constructed using the box pushing technique, which inserts large individual pieces of concrete under a working Expressway with minimal impact to traffic at surface level. Two precast RCC boxes — 11 metre × 6 metre and around 150 metre long each — will be pushed under the expressway beneath an eight-nine metre soil surcharge, the officials said.
“The interchange will be built nearly 30-feet underground. Pillars of the expressway are there and the Badshapur drain passes underneath. It would involve deep excavation and other earth-retention systems to maintain soil stability, with continuous dewatering at the site for work execution. A thrust bed will be made to ensure that huge concrete boxes are pushed steadily under the expressway structure,” said the NHAI official, who also informed that utilities like sewer lines and pipelines and overhead electrical lines present at this stretch would be protected and strengthened during construction.
HSIIDC is implementing this project under its flagship urban development initiative, Global City. The project is being developed as a mixed-use urban cluster spread across over 1,003 acres in sectors 36, 36B, 37 and 37B adjacent to the Dwarka Expressway. The project would consist of residential areas, commercial spaces and institutional facilities.
The initial phase of the Global City project, situated over a sprawling 587 acres, is expected to be completed by around June 2027. In this phase, HSIIDC is developing internal roads along with water supply, drainage, sewerage networks and electricity infrastructure besides landscaping and plantation.
Vision City, which spreads over 121 acres of land in sector 88 and lies across the expressway, is being developed as a new commercial cluster that will go hand-in-hand with Global City.
