New Delhi (so takes 8th consecutive year in the 1st place).
The “Loni” Shift: Its town called Loni was the most toxic place on earth this year because it was trapped in a pollution trap of industrial kilns and stagnant winter air which was also in the location adjacent to Delhi.
What is the reason behind the pollution of these cities?
Geography: The Himalayas serve as a trap trapping pollutants to Northern India and Pakistan during winter (Temperature Inversion).
Biomass Burning: Crop residue combustion in Punjab and Haryana causes almost all the peak winter pollution up to 60%.
Industrial/Vehicle Emissions: High urbanization pace of the NCR and the absence of strict rules on coal-emitting plants are the major contributors of the year-round.
