Smart & Wide Upgrading of 8-lane between vatika chowk To ghata chowk Gurgaon: Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) will have an eight-lane corridor on a 6-km stretch between Vatika Chowk and Ghata Chowk by extending the road shoulders bordering it on both sides. The work has been assigned to an agency by GMDA, officials said Friday. The project has been estimated to cost Rs 6.5 crore by GMDA.
The six-lane stretch at Vatika-Ghata is a crucial link that connects Golf Course Road, Sohna Road, Gurgaon-Faridabad Road and NH8 & Dwarka Expressway and sees heavy footfall owing to the rapid residential cum commercial development along the corridor.
In 2024, this segment’s main carriageway was rehabilitated but the shoulders remained unsealed. The loose soil along the edges contributes to dust pollution during dry weather, and the stretch becomes muddy and waterlogged during the monsoon.
Many people are actually seeking to increase their accidents along these lanes as a result of uneven surfaces and sudden merging near junctions.
GMDA plans to provide more lane discipline, hence converting these shoulders into well-paved lanes would effectively stop unsafe overtaking and poor driving conditions.
The project is set to be completed by the end of the year, but officials said work is underway to finish before deadline. The work has been assigned and will commence within a month. We are going to use the available width more efficiently by paving the shoulder and adding lanes, said an official from GMDA.
The move has been welcomed by commuters, with many saying it was a necessary step. But others said they needed to get more than cosmetic fixes such as proper drainage systems, greenbelts and pedestrian infrastructure. But better late than never.” Dust pollution is caused largely by unpaved roads. Glad to see our civic authorities finally doing something for it. But they also need to work towards some other issues too like drainage and greenbelt on that stretch,” said Amitansh Verma, a resident of Sector Sushant Lok 3.
